Planning a Funeral
To Plan a Catholic Funeral you will need to pick out four Scriptures and four hymns. Please go through the process below.
Readings
1. Pick here the first reading from the Old Testament
2. Pick here the Responsorial Psalm
3. Pick here your second reading from the New Testament
4. Pick here the Gospel reading
The Psalm is sung by the cantor (song leader) and the Gospel is proclaimed by the priest. The Old Testament and New Testament readings are read by a lector of the parish. If a family member is a lector in their Catholic Parish, they may do the readings at the funeral.
Music
1. Processional Hymn- This is sung while we enter the Church.
2. Offertory Hymn- This is sung as the altar is prepared for the Eucharist.
3. Communion Hymn- This is sung during the reception of Holy Communion.
4. Song of Farewell- This is sung while the priest incenses the body/casket.
5. Recessional Hymn- This is sung while we leave the Church.
The parish provides the organist/pianist and cantor/song leader. If a family member is a cantor in their Catholic parish, they are welcome to assist with music.
