Song of Farewell

Shorter songs for the preparation and longer songs for the closing, especially if the funeral is large or the exit from the church is delayed. “Shepherd Me O God” is best as a responsorial psalm or commuion. “On Eagle’s Wings” is best for responsorial, commuion or closing. Opening songs are better if they can be segmented - that is, they do not have to have all verses sung, or if verses can be repeated for long opening processions.

The choice of hymns for funerals is somewhat personal -it is good if we can help family members who are planning their loved ones’ funeral to pick songs that will be meaningful and comforting
